Deal hope for survivors

Monday February 20 2012

THE Government has given its strongest signal yet that it is prepared to compensate the former residents of the Protestant-run Bethany Home.

Survivors of the Dublin home have been excluded from redress up to now, because the Government has insisted it does not recognise the former mother-and-baby home as a state residential institution.

But Justice Minister Alan Shatter might finally be ready to cut a deal, after he stressed last week: "It is my intention to give full consideration to this important matter."

The former home made headlines when 219 unmarked graves of children born there were discovered in Mount Jerome Cemetery in Dublin.

Survivors' spokesman Derek Leinster (70) said yesterday: "We need action now and no more empty promises."
