The Shame of Ireland
The berries and leaves of the Hawthorn were, for a time every year, part of our staple diet in the Industrial Schools. When we had to go out into the fields to pick the potatoes etc., we'd supplement our diets by collecting hawthorn AND blackberries from the hedges.
AT other times of the year the leaves of the blackthorn were also eaten - we called them Bread & Cheese!
