The conditions in nineteenth century Irish workhouses may not have differed much to the one that Oliver Twist was billeted in. In Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin, two buildings previously in use as orphanages have different existences, and futures, today. Recent incarnations for ‘Mrs Smyly’s Home’ on York Road — the ‘Bird’s Nest’ as it is colloquially known — one of the town’s first orphanages and home at one stage to Irish soccer legend Paul McGrath, have included office and living space.
