The Shame of Ireland

The Shame of Ireland

For those of you living in the UK and Subject to the Bedroom Tax?

My wife and I have fallen foul of the Bedroom Tax, this is despite the fact that the Council House that we live in has been adapted due to my wife’s medical needs.

This means that she should have been eligible for a “Discretionary Housing Payment” to make up the Shortfall in the rent.

The reason for this I because she received a “Personal Injury Payment” from the Irish Residential Institutions Redress Board.

The money was immediately placed in a “Trust Fund” for my wife’s “Special Needs”.

This was done to protect access to UK Benefits, ie. Housing Benefit, Council Tax, and other Social Security Benefits.

I am currently waiting for a “Review of the Decision”.

I you have any questions on this or the Nature of a “Trust Fund” Pleae ask and I will do my best to answer. Bearing in mind I am neither a Solicitor of Accountant.

The Guide to UK Discretionary Housing Payments can be found at this Link #DHP

Rob, I don't understand any of it. I am a carer for my Hubbie, BUT own my Home. So I don't think I can get any help. However, I hope you get what you should get for your wife. It would be better if the money in the Trust Fund went to the survivors. All of us have a use for it. Maggie

Hi Maggie,

The Trust Fund Mentioned in the Post above was where the Money my wife received from the Redress Board, it his her Trust Fund, for her needs.

The reason this was necessary is without a Trust fund the Money received from the Redress Board would have been seen by the Department of Work and Pensions (Social Security) and Housing Benefit as Income.

This would mean that she would have to use this to live off, until it was gone;more on Trust Funds can be read @

I am watching with interest the unfolding of the Statutory Trust Fund; I still believe that it was wrong to set it up. I also believe that Redress was not on a par with the High Courts; but cannot challenge this?
