The Shame of Ireland
"The Catholic Church and authorities north and south of the border came under huge criticism for how the instances of abuse by Smyth were covered up for years."

Daniel Patrick Carry : -
"The State is incredibly culpable in all of this. Remember that the Smyth case brought down a Government over how it was so egregiously mishandled by the Attorney General. Not to mention that ridiculous agreement between the State and the Religious Orders over the limits of their liabilities in meeting compensation. That was a deal that would make even Apple envious. We have a statue of Jesus on O’Connell Street yet we have no national monument to the shame and disgrace that was the suffering and torture inflicted on thousands of people by the forces of the Church and the State for decades. Absolutely nothing. Not one public reminder of the evil we allowed in this country. I always find that remarkable. We have statues and parades to throw sugar at martyrs and dead patriots but nothing for these people. Only adds to the shame."
Excellent point Jack, can you imagine the outrage if a company had done what the church has done and was then allowed to design its own indemnity and gag under penalty of law everyone involved, absolute insanity.
