The Shame of Ireland

On Saturday 22nd October, the day before a silent protest takes place in a public effort and demonstration to get justice for Philip Cairns, a very important court case will take place in San Francisco.

A Senior US District Court Judge will hear how documented serial child abuser and swimming coach George Gibney was able to get a 'certificate of character' from the gardai after his abuse court case hearing (17 charges of abuse) was quashed due to a time expiration technicality in 1994. Gibney immediately fled the country and currently lives in Florida.

This cover up was allowed by top level government, judicial and garda officials at the time - the same people who have not allowed the truth come out about Philip Cairns.

The paedophile Gibney successfully won a high court judicial review in 1994 which prevented the DPP from pressing ahead with its case against him. Gibney made a US visa application in 1992 (two years before the judicial review) and following the collapse of the case eventually made it to the States where he has lived ever since.

On Saturday 22nd next, Senior US District Court Judge Charles Breyer will hear oral arguments in San Francisco. Judge Breyer had originally rejected the government's motion to withhold almost all of the Gibney file from public scrutiny. We can only hope that justice for all those who were victims of Gibney is at last within sight. And I wish Judge Breyer the very best with all that lies ahead of him.
