The Shame of Ireland

You poor, poor child, who grew up so confused Your father was a holic, your mother was abused

You poor, poor child, who grew up so confused Your father was a holic, your mother was abused You poor, poor child, who grew up so confused Your father was a holic, your mother was abused They fed you, they clothed you, sent you to the best schools And when you were misdiagnosed, they did not know what to do Even though they loved you, they could not communicate For the fear in their hearts, the pain was too great So the doctors prescribed, we know the drugs did not work Now you’re getting admiration for the way that you twerk Needing that attention, looking for that love Searching for yourself, and when push comes to shove It’s only honesty that ever sets you free It’s only honesty that will ever set you free It’s not your fault, it’s not your parents who are to blame It’s the society we’re all born to, which plays a deadly game Where power is the master, and profit is the plan Charity is a cover for the abusers slight of hand Generations of trauma, glorified as a noble myth The kings and queens are legends, their stories incomplete The pathology they represent is never fully diagnosed The sickness of power is never truthfully exposed Needing that attention, looking for that love Searching for solutions, and when push comes to shove It’s only honesty that ever sets us free It’s only honesty that will ever set us free So I start at the beginning, the beginning is inside My heart, my mind, my body and the places where I hide The truth I have experienced, the pain I have survived The past must be composted if we are all to thrive Break it down, let’s look at it, be honest and be real Expose the lies, and see the facts, be open to what we feel For what was lost, for what was broken, for things we want today True love, sweet laughter, community and friends, the delight of children’s play Giving that attention, sharing all that love Discovering solutions, and when push comes to shove It’s only honesty that ever sets us free It’s only honesty that will ever set us free
