Man arrested over murder of chip shop stab victim David Sheridan

David Sheridan and scene where he was savagely attacked near the Five Lamps in Dublin

A 63-year-old man has been arrested in connection with murder of David Sheridan.

The man was arrested this morning and is being held at Mountjoy Garda station.

Dad-of-two David “Gummy” Sheridan was savagely attacked near the iconic Five Lamps in Dublin’s north inner city on Sunday night.

He was rushed to hospital where he was in a critical condition overnight and the 45-year-old, who struggled with alcohol addiction, lost his fight for life shortly after 11am yesterday.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror the victim’s niece Serena Davis, 25, said: “He was just a gentle soul and he didn’t deserve that to happen to him."

Some of the attack was caught on CCTV and a worker in the fast-food shop witnessed the incident.

Civil servant arrested in connection to murder of David Sheridan

Published 19/08/2014 | 10:15

A CIVIL servant has been arrested after a man was stabbed to death at the weekend.

"The male was arrested this morning in Dublin and is being detained at Mountjoy Garda station under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended," a spokesman said.

The latest development comes as Mr Sheridan's brother spoke of the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support machine.

Gerry Sheridan (52) said his brother David's stab wounds were so severe he could not have survived.

The father of three, known as 'Gummy' to his friends, died in the Mater Hospital yesterday after being stabbed several times in an attack at a Dublin city centre takeaway the previous night.

"The guards rang me at 6am and told me to come to the hospital fast as it didn't look good. When I arrived he was covered in tubes. When he was stabbed in the back, the knife severed an artery. The doctor told me nothing more could be done and I agreed the machine could be switched off," he said.

David Sheridan

"David had a very sad life. A brother and a sister took their own lives when he was young. He spent years as a child in the industrial school in Clonmel where he was sexually abused. That place changed him in a bad way and when he got out he got into robbing and doing drugs and ended up in prison. He became a heroin addict and an alcoholic.

"He got a quarter of a million in compensation for what happened him in Clonmel and he drank most of it away, along with his friends. He was on methadone too."

Speaking at his home off Sherrard Street in Dublin, Gerry said: "I felt he was lost. I was looking after him recently until about a week-and-a-half ago when he left."

Anita Judge, mother of
David's teenage son, said: "David was a very good man with a very big heart."

Speaking at her home in Finglas East, she said she had a six-year relationship with him with many happy memories.

"I'm very angry. David didn't deserve this after all he'd been through in his life. It's wrong to take a life. He was a good dad to his son," she said.

The 45-year-old victim was stabbed several times in the stomach and back outside
Luigi's takeaway premises at North Strand in Dublin's north inner city.

Mr Sheridan was well known to gardai and had a series of criminal convictions.

He was given a two-year
suspended sentence for robbery by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court last January.

I find it Very distasteful the the Independent Highlighted the level of Compensation he received from the Redress Board "a quarter of a million in compensation for what happened him in Clonmel" this was an exceptional amount, The average payout was 67,000.

To be awarded such an amount he must of been through hell and back?

They also Focus on Drugs and Alcohol abused and a life of Crime!

I feel they are tarring Survivors with the same Brush?

Handsomely Compensated, Drug a Alcohol Abusing Criminals!

Surely this Man who suffered so much should have been afforded some dignity in his Death?

Shame on You!

Strangely the Irish Mirror which is a "Red Top" of which I would have expected the Sleaze and Character assignation Acted with respect and Dignity!

Which Excuse for a Catholic Church Apologist owns the Independent??

i was not sure what 1/4 of a million was.  2 siblings had taken their lives. not sure if they too were in the industrial school in Clonmel. if they were perhaps they too were abused leading to their deaths.

The defendant, Donal Colgan, from Killarney Street, in central Dublin, was remanded in custody with a judge ordering that he was to get medical attention.

Typical of the Independent to denigrate an abuse survivor.  The same group of newspapers spiked and killed stories relating to abuse in the Industrial Schools .... especially stories concerning the brutality of the Christian Brothers.

RIP David .... from an ex-Ferryhouse boy.

Ireland and the Catholic Church has yet another death on its hands.  the big question is did he get help in dealing with the  mental issues brought on by his his atrocious abuse in Clonmel.   The only comforting thought now is he is no longer being tortured emotionally.  Condolences to his family.

This paper probably exagurated this figure I doubt  he was given that much.  Still a small sum for what he had to live through.  No amount of money gives back what was taken from him and what he had endure as all Survivors.
